My nephew has Autism need gift idea?

Tuesday Mar 16, 2010
  • Hello My nephew has Autism and is going to turn 3 in March. I want to get him something for Christmas but I am not sure what to get him or what kind of things he likes other then Thomas the Train, I live Miles away so I haven't seen him much so I want to get him something good, but am unsure of the type of things Autistic kids can relate to. Do you have any ideas...All his mom said is "Don't worry about getting him anything, he doesn't need anything" Thanks

  • I work with special ed students, one is autistic. He enjoys making towers with blocks! small one or large ones! It keeps him busy and gets so excited when it's finished! Then, he laughs when he knocks it over! No matter what kind of a condition a child has, getting a gift is fun! I would check with Toys R Us and see what they recommend!

  • bumble balls are great

low skill --high interest at this age--

last I check you can still get them on ebay-brand new
make sure you get a battery powered (not the tiny pull string)

  • books are CD are sometimes of high interest - but kids on the spectrum can vary so much it's hard to say.

If mom says - he doesn't need anything - consider a very old fashioned thing that could be important long term - how about a savings bond. He is young has lots of toys already - a savings bond or bank account could be important later on.

If he was a bit older as was more in the Asperger end of the spectrum - perhaps a zoo or museum membership or tickets.

Or perhaps provide a sitter to give his parents a night out. That might help them all.

  • My little brother has a form of Autism and we've always found that he enjoys toys where he can build things, like LEGO's or blocks for example. Anything like that that can keep him busy and keep him relaxed, but it also depends on what he enjoys doing. Hope this helps.

  • MCC had some great ideas. My daughter didn't have much interest in toys at that age, but she did love her magnadoodle. Preschool learning/games software might be a good idea as well. I would bet you could find something Thomas oriented. Thomas pj's or t-shirts would probably be an even bigger hit, or a stuffed Thomas to sleep with. A Thomas T-shirt would probably get more use than most toys, and would be loved by a Thomas obsessed kiddo.
