Can you get DQ'd from the air force if you are allergic to bee stings?

Wednesday Mar 10, 2010
  • The Standards for Intial Entry are different from those for Retention. You cannot join with problems such as allergies to foods, bee stings or having asthma.

A need to carry meds in case of bee sting would be a DQ. Becoming allergic after joining and having been in some time may not. They can still retire you if the problem is severe enough. Each health issue is dealt with a bit different.

IF after joining these problems develop they are dealt with in an entirely different fashion.

Edit: From the AR (A DOD Standard as in it applies to all branches)

    j. History of anaphylaxis (995.0), including, but not limited to idiopathic and exercise-induced; anaphylaxis to
venom, including stinging insects (989.5); foods or food additives (995.60â “69); or to natural rubber latex (989.82), is
    disqualifying.

The wording in the other answer is directly from Air Force Instruction 48-123.

  • from military.com:
The causes for rejection for appointment, enlistment, and induction are:

    a. Allergic manifestations. A reliable history of anaphylaxis to stinging insects. Reliable history of a moderate to severe reaction to common foods, spices, or food additives.

  • the answer to your question is No, you can't get DQ'd from the air force if you are allergic to bee stings. However, you have to let your physician know. He will probably ensure that you have an Epi pen which you will be required to keep with you. If you haven't been to Boot Camp yet, they will probably make you carry it around with you the whole time. If you are already in, you can make sure that one is available to you in your car or in a backpack or something. You WILL have to wear a red dogtag that states your allergy. If you deploy to the field, you will have to keep the Epi Pen in your IFAK (individual first aid kit) that everyone is issued. For your own safety, you need to make sure your medic is always aware of the situation. Allergies to bee stings mean you're probably allergic to scorpion stings and other type of insect venoms. This could be a problem at certain duty stations, like the desert.

  • not if ur already in. im in the army and my friend has asthma and hes allergic to bees and hes still in(medical knows this).
