Can You Bring Embroidery Needles and Scissors onto Planes?

Saturday Mar 13, 2010
  • I'm totally into embroidery and I'm going on a trip soon, and what better way to pass then time then to embroider. I was just wondering if you could bring needles and scissors as a carry on onto planes. If so, what size and types.

  • The TSA website will give you the latest regulations: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/p...

Last time I traveled with cross stitching I took needles and this cutting pendant http://www.amazon.com/Clover-Thread-Cutt...

  • Your best bet on this is to contact the airline directly. Unless there happens to be someone here who works in that industry and is up on all the very latest regs, you'll only be getting hearsay -- and then you'll have to check it out yourself anyway. Please get the truth on something like this. Contact the airline directly. They can answer this question authoritatively.

  • I do looming knitting and I was able to take my knitting hook (which is pretty sharp) so I'm certain that your needles will be fine. I checked my scissors with my luggage. But you take scissors as long as they are those small blunt scissors like the kind the kids use in school. Wal-Mart carries them. I would suggest though that you contact your local airport to see what they say. I've traveled a bit and so many airports are different although you would think they all have the same rules. Hope this helps

  • The lady in front of me asked if she could bring her knitting on board. She was told plastic knitting needles are okay but not metal ones.

  • Needles are ok. Scissors - Scissors - metal with pointed tips and blades shorter than four inches are ok. According to TSA website.

I have had small embroidery scissors in my carry on and have not had a problem.

  • In Australia you can't take scissors, knives, needles, knitting needles, nail file or anything sharp that could be used as a weapon, no matter how small.
My husband had a small pocket knife on a keyring, the blade was only 2 cm long, they wouldn't let him pass. He had to take it back to the car, or they would have kept it.
You can pack them in your bag but not carry them in your carry on luggage.
