How can you explain a patriarchal society? ?

  • What are the key points of interest?

  • It is a myth. If anything we live in a matriarchal society.

  • a patriarchal society is one in which most power and most leadership roles are invested in men. This is true of all societies, throughout most of history. The closes we have ever come to a non-patriarchal society is modern western society.

  • The middle east may be described as one, western countries are not. Feminists, however, have not figured that out yet.

  • Here is a concise definition from the Dictionary of the Social Sciences:

    PATRIARCHY

"Literally â ˜rule by the fatherâ ™ but more generally it refers to a social situation where men are dominant over women in wealth, status and power. Patriarchy is associated with a set of ideas, a â ˜patriarchal ideologyâ ™ that acts to explain and justify this dominance and attributes it to inherent natural differences between men and women. Sociologists tend to see patriarchy as a social product and not as an outcome of innate differences between the sexes and they focus attention on the way that gender roles in a society affect power differentials between men and women."

  • Have a look at the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic church for an example of how a patriarchal system works, especially with regards to the use and management of power.

The Orthodox Churches are also good examples, and to make things easier, their leaders are often actually known as the 'Patriarch'.

Another good example is a country such as Zimbabwe, where Robert Mugabe (the 'big man') plays the role of patriarch to the citizens.

Wikipedia also has an easy to understand explanation of patriarchy.

    Cheers :-)
