I know most people do not like to categorize toddlers but can I tell if my 2 year old is advanced?

Tuesday Mar 16, 2010
  • My 2 year old (27months) just amazes me, which of course 2 years old amaze all parents, but I have sometimes she leaves me completely speechless. She remembers directions in the car if she wants to go to her favorite places, basically telling me make a left or a right, she says about 10-15 word sentences."Mommy can you go get my bottle please, its downstairs, in the fridge" This sentence came out clear as day she knows about 10 kiddie songs word for word, and too many radio songs, Her pediatrician said that she seems very advanced but they do not recommend an IQ test until 3 years old. I just want to know what other parents may have experienced. She knows most of the alphabet i mean by seeing it, of course she knows the song. Her nanny is Spanish and she understands and responds in Spanish, and she speaks to me in English so she knows the distinction. I am not sure how many words she can say, I just think about what she can not say yet, she practically learned a song after me singing it like 2 times. And she remembers the names of 7 students in her class...just wondering...any answers would be great.

  • i was like that too. she is quite the advanced toddler

  • wow, that is amazing your going to have an incredibly sharp little one on your hands:) my son was the same way, all of sudden he started learning things so easily and remembering them, he awes me on a daily basis, and my daughter she great at learning too, but her strange intelligent thing is she remembers things from when she was one, and shes 3 and a half. she will tell me vivid details of things that happened then that we haven't talked about at all. kids are so amazing, i think they'll be smarter then me by the time their 5, i guess prenatal vitamins work, ha ha

  • One of my kids was like that. He could talk really well at 18 months and also remember how to go places. Since I am lost all the time it amazed me.
I will say your daughter should not be on the bottle at her age. It gets harder and harder to take at this age.
She sounds really special. Enjoy her every minute. In what seems like weeks she'll be 18 and asking for the car keys.

  • She sounds advanced. Hold off on the IQ test until she is in school, it is fairly useless until then anyway, it is just a label. Avoid telling people she is smart/advanced and especially in front of her. It is just an ideal she may be forced to live up to. The most nervous children I have ever come across are those that are forced to constantly prove they are gifted. Just enjoy the learning experience and get some educational tools for children aged 3-5, she will love them!

  • I have worked in childcare for years with the 2 to 3 age group. I have not yet met a child of 27 months that can do all of that. I would say you obviously have a very clever cookie and you are doing a very good job at teaching her. They do say that children who learn more than one language are usually a bit smarter.

  • i think she is advanced...
i'm 14 (so i don't have kids) but i have a 2 year old cousin but i didn't even know what he was saying when he told me his backpack was at home...
