Whats the best processor for an AMD 939 socket?

Saturday Mar 13, 2010
  • I currently have a AMD Athlon 3700+. I wanted to get something better than 2.2 ghz, any suggestions? An Athlon Athlon X2?

  • Your choices are very limited. There is not much left available for the 939 socket, except on the 2nd hand market. Even Newegg won't sell em anymore. You won't get much higher in ghz, but you can go dual core. 939 is not compatible with anything AM2 or AM2+, so look for a 939 processor as it gets confusing with similar sounding nomenclature. People are getting gouged trying to buy old 939 processors. Best bet is to buy a cheap 775 board, dirt cheap core 2 duo and dirt cheap ddr2 memory, which would all destroy the fastest 939.

You could do a 2.4 allendale core 2 duo (83.00) with a $60.00 1333 motherboard, and 4 gigs of ram for another 40.00, and have a crapload of room to upgrade later to a Wolfdale quad core. There is a 4800x2 939 on ebay right now, used, going for 190.00 with a few days yet to bid. What a joke.

  • A turion wont work, it's for laptops. If your mobo can support a dual core, then get a 3.0GHz dual core CPU.

  • deffinately get something x2. i think turions work with that socket, u should double check though. if they do get a turrion x2
