Is my dog antisocial? or does he just hate me?

  • ok, so my dog is 4-5 years old. he was dumped on 1-95. we think he may have been from a puppy farm, then a hunting dog in bad conditions who did'nt have a normal social development. we aren't sure if he is deaf, or if he does not understand when humans talk to him (because he wasn't talked to in the social development stage). he doesn't come when called and isn't very affectionant. he's a beagle. so, does he not understand or does he not WANT to understand....?


  • Have you had a vet take a good look at him? A vet would be better qualified to give you an answer. it's so hard not knowing what physical problems he may have.


  • once you rule out whether or not he's deaf... just snap you fingers, or clap, and see if his ears move towards the sound at all.. you can decide whether or not he's simply ignoring you.

    sounds like he has a long road of rehabilitation ahead of him but you should be able to get him to follow simple commands with determination and consistency. how long have you had your puppy for? does he show any signs of aggression or fear? you need to build trust between you and your dog and show that you are the leader of his pack. have you tried enticing him with treats to come when he's called? it's not an innate trait and he has to learn that when you call his name, (which he might still have to learn too) he will be positively rewarded. go slowly but consistantly, he sounds as if he is unsure of you and you will have to work hard to prove that you are his leader.

    i recommend watching some cesar milan on either the national geographic channel or youtube. He is a fantastic dog rehabilitator and he has great tips for everyday people like you and me.


  • It just sounds like he wasn't given the proper attention when he needed it most. Just keep working with him, give him love and treats, take him for walks, praise him you know the works
