Argentina Floods

Wednesday Jan 7, 2009
  • They looked horrible on the news last night, but living in earthquake country, I know that they can show the one destroyed building and the whole world thinks we're all dead.

Any reports "en vivo" from someone here?

  • Well the wife and I chose last Tuesday instead of Thursday to do some business in Buenos Aires city. What a lucky choice that was when I saw the floods in Palermo on the TV.
It did however clear very quickly which was great news although a lot of shopkeepers must have been hit hard.
Seems to be verylocalised as we are 100 miles away from BA and we haven't had any rain worth talking about for weeks yet in a town 20 miles down the road they were badly flooded as well.

  • The new mayor, Mauricio Macri, was elected on various main issues... one of them was drains & flooding. He has been in office for just a few weeks, and already has announced commencement of some major works to stop this horrible chaos that some parts of the city suffer every time if pours down hard.

This past flooding was nothing compared to what things have been in the past.... so at least things are slowly moving in the right direction.

  • Certain neighborhoods got hit hard because they don't have good drainage systems in place - it's a running battle here to get them fixed up and cleaned out. Happens every year during the rainy season(s) - the water stays for anywhere from a few hours to a few days, and gradually subsides. Meanwhile, a few blocks away in a 'hood where the drains have been cleaned out and/or upgraded, you don't see any water...
