How to check modchip and bios version?

Sunday Mar 14, 2010
  • hi there,

i bought this modded xbox a few months back and haven't got much time with it after reading a lot of how-tos and setting up the xbmc (it was bought primarily to use xbmc). i would like to know how i could check the bios information of the modchip in xbmc, could anyone shed me some light? thanks a lot...

(i saw something in settings called smartxx and wonder if that was the correct information coz my modded dashboard is named evoxdash.xbe and there's a evox icon on the top left hand corner on screen when the modded mode boot up; is the "brand" of bios independent from the hardware chip? )

    cheers, anno

  • thanks for the advice. i installed the latest build of xbmc and found out the name smartxx in the system setting (as mentioned in my first post) and i was wondering if that was the accurate way to check bios and modchip info. the reason why i wanna know the details is that i'm thinking about upgrading the xbox hdd and am unsure if the bios version matters (some guides i found indicated that newer evox bios version).....

  • ok, i've checked my bios now:
when i start up evox is reads: kernel: 1.00.4983.67
is this bios too old? what bios should i look for?

  • your mod chip could be one of many brands and the bios it runs is at the whim of who ever installed it.

the evodash.xbe probably means your xbox has the evolution dashboard (but my xbmc is call evodash).

xbe 's are like exe in wintel machines they are executables.

the evodash is often paired with evolution bios but will work happily with others i.e xecuter

the xecuter bios puts its name just below the flubber when the xbox boots so is easy to identify.

if you read the xbmc faq and manual it explains quite well what dash names work and why.

if you have your dash named evodash then its pretty obvious what you need to do to get the xbmc working as a dash.

if you not trying to get the xbmc working as a dash and don't have a lcd enhanced xbox then why do you care what modchip/bios your running.?

    don't worry xbmc doesn't!!

  • gamester17 i think thats a bit harsh

"awaldram is only right in one thing he said"

macanno was asking if the xbox reported chipset was correct and you answered the xbox reports the chipset how is your answer correct?

i do believe all my statements were correct though maybe over simplified.

maybe i should have pointed out the only garrenteed method of finding the chipset is with a screwdriver , and the only method of ensuring what bios/version your running is to upload a known version to the modchip.

but in general the xbox is normaly right.

  • i'm thinking about upgrading the xbox hdd and am unsure if the bios version matters (some guides i found indicated that *newer evox bios version)depends on how large harddrive you plan to upgrade too and how you like it partitioned. if less then 137gb then any bios should due (though it wouldn't hurn to use the latest evox or xecuter2), however if larger than that then you need a bios that support lba48 (read www.xbox-scene.com tutorials). there are then two kind of lba48 bioses, those that split the size/data over 8gb to two partitions (129gb on f: and rest on g:) and those that put all size/data over 8gb onto f: ...for question onw how-to do this and more details i recommend you visit www.xbox-scene.com forums.

maybe i should have pointed out the only garrenteed method of finding the chipset is with a screwdriver , and the only method of ensuring what bios/version your running is to upload a known version to the modchip.maybe, becuase what he was asking was (subject topic):
"how to check modchip and bios version?" and "how i could check the bios information of the modchip in xbmc?"

  • i would like to know how to find out bios model etc.

i'm not at home at the moment, so unscrewing the xbox is not and option.
i know that i'm runnning evolutionx , but not sure what bios version i have. i need to upgrade it i think as there are some network issues with xbmc (it hangs alot when connected to my lan). any ideas?

  • i believe awaldram is only right in one thing he said and that is "do you care what modchip/bios your running?", because you shouldn't have to unless you have problems. anyway, so answer your question correctly; if your using a new cvs version of xbmc (which it doesn't sound like you are) then there is a function built-into xbmc which can detect most (but not all modchips and bioses), that feature is available in the settings under "system", if you don't see it then you need to get a newer build of xbmc.
